About

Captain’s Hope, Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Carey Rich, a former University of South Carolina Men’s Basketball Team standout and current Recreation Superintendent with the city of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. Carey’s goal for creating Captain’s Hope, Inc. is to instill hope and provide inspiration to local youth.

I want the foundation to serve as the bridge that connects our youth to new opportunities.

Carey Rich, Founder

A native of Columbia, SC, Carey grew up in Saxon Homes Housing Projects, while attending Carver Elementary, W.A. Perry Middle School, and C.A. Johnson High School. As a high school junior, Carey led C.A. Johnson Basketball team to their first 3A State Championship in 1989. While Carey was at the University of South Carolina, he became a 3-year starter, to include being named a 2-time Captain, which only happened eight times prior in the school’s history.

Throughout his basketball career and beyond, Carey has received numerous awards including the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Award (Western Carolina University); Columbia Housing Authority’s Wall of Fame; Richland School District One Hall of Fame; and as a Southeastern Conference Legend.

Because Carey’s passion has always centered around helping youth, he founded the MLK High School Basketball Bash, Middle School Showcase and co-founded the S.C. Pro Am. In addition, Carey serves on several boards including: UofSC Athletic Hall of Fame, Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament, South Carolina State Troopers Advisory Board and Richland One Education Foundation.

Carey also has recurring roles on the official Gamecock Radio Station 107.5 The Game and WACH FOX 57 television station, where he is affectionately known as The Captain.

In addition to his television and radio duties, Carey speaks at various events including school programs, conferences and community functions. To book Carey for upcoming speaker engagements, please contact us at info@captainshopeinc.com.

Carey is the proud father of twins, Carey Rich Jr. and Kierra Rich.
